Operation Namibia
Operation Namibia ging von den Universitäten in London und Philadelphia aus. Es wurden Bücher gesammelt, die verbotenerweise vor den Augen der Weltöffentlichkeit auf einem Segelschiff nach Namibia gebracht werden sollten – als konkrete und zugleich symbolische Aktion, mit der letztlich das System von Zensur und Apartheid zu Fall gebracht werden sollte.
In the summer of 1976, a boat will sail from Portsmouth, England, bound for Namibia. It will carry a cargo of books collected by various groups and individuals around the world. The aim of Operation Namibia is to deliver the books openly to the Namibian National Convention, which has set up a library to receive them, and to generate awareness of the illegal presence of South Africa, and the plight of the Namibians.
Operation Namibia realises that, to allow the cargo into the country without interference, the South Africans must concede some significant aspect of their control. Our major aim is to encourage such consessions using direct approach, dramatic symbolism, open organisation and transnational campaigning. Operation Namibia undertakes to make every nonviolent attempt to deliver the cargo of books.
